In memory of David Schermerhorn Somebody once said that any good and responsible man can be a father. That saying in itself says so much about Dave. Somebody that I could call my dad. He helped raise two daughters that were not of his blood into loving mothers. One of which I fell in love with from the first moment my eyes gazed upon her. When I first met Dave he welcomed me into his home and asked me a question that would take me by complete surprise. A question that I will not be sharing any time soon, but will make me laugh every time I think about it. The second thing he said to me was “it takes a special kind of man to be able to handle my daughter”, or at least that’s how I remember it. Over the years I learned many things about Dave. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He loved to argue till no end. He loved to trash talk especially if you could trash talk back. He would never back down if he believed he was right. He loved cake and ice cream, probably more than he should have. He loved taking his grandsons hunting and would do almost anything for them. He could be obstinate, pigheaded and difficult. BUT he was also truthful, kind aand loyal to the end. Always seeming to give the shirt off his back to someone in need. He was filled with deep emotion. Even though he didn’t always show it. I will miss my father in law until the day it is my time to go. Written by Bryan Soukup, Son in Law.
