Walter Edward Stewart, Age 90, of Menahga passed away on Tuesday, May 3, 2022 after a long 20 year battle with cancer, at Woodside Manor Assisted Living. Walter was born on August 30, 1931 in Savannah Township, Becker County MN to Edward Lincoln Stewart and Elsie M. (Knight) Stewart. He attended Lakeside School through eighth grade before attending High School in Park Rapids and graduating in 1950. On May 25, 1951 he was drafted into military service by the United States Navy. He went through basic training at Great Lakes, IL. He then went on to Aircraft Engine School in Memphis, TN. The rest of his military service was completed at Key West, FL. Walter earned an honorable discharge on May 27, 1955. On August 24, 1957 he was united in marriage to Louise Irene Trimble of Menahga at the Assembly of God Church in Menahga. The couple was blessed with two sons. The family relocated several times, living in Duluth, Minneapolis, and Brainerd MN and also Fargo, ND before settling in Sioux City, IA in 1969. Walter and Louise relocated to Menahga in October of 2019. Walter made his living by working in the automotive glass business. He worked for Gopher Glass, Modern Glass and opened and managed Harmon Glass Co. in Sioux City, IA from 1969 until his retirement in 1997. Walter loved the outdoors, which included hunting, fishing and picking Blueberries. He also enjoyed making homemade sauerkraut, and was the official cabbage cutter during the cabbage cutting process. Other hobbies included playing cribbage and Scrabble, and building puzzles.W Walter was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Elsie, two brothers Roy and Merlin Stewart, and Daughter-in-law Theresa Stewart of Watkins, and one extended Grandson Zach Doyle. He is survived by his wife Louise of 64 years, sisters Juanita Bergsing of Crystal, MN, Hope Stewart of Anoka, MN, sons Kevin Stewart of Watkins, MN, and Bryan (Dawn) Stewart of Sioux City, IA. He is also survived by brother-in-laws David Trimble of Menahga, MN, and Richard (Rachel) Trimble of Loveland, CO, and sister-in-law Bev Trimble of Menahga, MN. Other survivors include 3 grandchildren Andrew Stewart of Brandon, SD, Michelle (Patrick) Julch of Sioux City, IA, William Stewart of Sioux City, IA, one extended grandson Michael Sturgeon of Sioux City, IA, six great grandchildren Chloe Stewart, Joshua Kruchten, Tyler Butrous, Lucas Butrous, Teigan Stewart, and Christopher Stewart, along with one extended great granddaughter Ava Sturgeon, and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers are David Trimble, Jack Sharp, Marlyn Stewart, and Patrick Julch. Honorary pallbearers are all who called him a friend. Services will be held Monday, May 9th at 11:00 am at Pinewood Church Assembly of God in Menahga with visititation one hour prior to the service at the church. Service will be officiated by Pastor Ken Skillings. Hymns were “The Old Rugged Cross,” “How Great Thou Art,” and “Jesus Loves Me.” Interment will be at Menahga City Cemetery. Full military honors will be provided by the Guy L. McDermit VFW Post 6206 of Menahga, MN.
