Shirley Mae Harvala

Shirley Mae Harvala, 91, died peacefully on Friday, December 8, 2023 at Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in Menahga, Minnesota. Shirley was born to Clifford and Saima (Simi) Salmela on July 4, 1932 in Red Eye Township, Sebeka Mn and was raised on a farm outside of Menahga. Shirley attended a country school and eventually transferred to Menahga School graduating with the class of 1951. Afterward, Shirley married Arnold Wilfred Harvala on June 21, 1952. After living in 3 homes located in Minneapolis, Chisholm and New York Mills, they finally settled outside the Sebeka area living in Ottertail County where they raised a family of 5 boys. After the death of Arnold, Shirley moved into Woodside Manor assisted living and eventually into Green Pine Acres Nursing home. Shirley was a lifelong member of the American Legion Auxiliary and also Our Saviors Lutheran Church of Sebeka. Shirley is survived by her sons Terrence Harvala of Waseca, MN, Tyrone and his wife Pattie of Jamestown, ND and Todd of Liberty, MO. Brother Donald (Dianne) Salmela of Plymouth, MN, 2 grandkids Justin and Jake and many nieces and nephews. Shirley is preceded in death by her parents and husband Arnold, 3 sons, Tommy, Theodore and Trevor, brothers Larry, Leroy, Loyel and one sister Hazel. Funeral Services will be held 1:00 PM Wednesday, December 13, 2023 at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Sebeka, MN with visitation two hours prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Pickerel Lake Cemetery, Wolf Lake Township, Becker County, MN.
