Mavis Lorraine Mattila

July 17, 1938 — March 1, 2023

Mavis Lorraine (Sandberg) Mattila, 84, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 1st, 2023 at Green Pine Acres in Menahga, MN. She was born July 17, 1938 in Granite Falls, MN to Elmer and Gladys Sandberg. The eldest of seven children, Mavis grew up on the family farm. After graduating from Granite Falls High School in 1956, she moved to Minneapolis, graduated from the Minnesota School of Business and worked at the Gold Bond Stamp Company. During this time, she met a sweet young man named Marvin Mattila and was married April 8, 1961. They had two daughters and lived in Brooklyn Park where Mavis was a home daycare provider for over 20 years. In 2001 Marv and Mavis retired and moved to Menahga. Here she continued her love of gardening, canning, baking, crafting, crocheting, mentoring and volunteering at church and in her community. Her love of family, friends and God were evident everyday of her life. She was a wonderful Grandma to her three grandsons and loved sharing her time and talents with them. Mavis made many unforgettable memories with numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. Mavis would always be sure to send visitors home with a variety of sweets, often including her legendary jam. She spent her final days surrounded by family and caregivers, spreading love and laughter, emblematic of her life as a whole. Mavis is preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Halsne, brother, Alden, and brother-in-law, Sonny Brown. She is lovingly remembered by her husband of 61years, Marvin, daughters: Mindy (Mark) Lapham and Missy Schleper. Grandsons: Jay (Sev Larson) Lapham, John Lapham and Grant Schleper. Siblings: James (Delores) Sandberg, Bernice (Rollie) Corsten, Clara (Bob) Overby, Shirley Brown, Keith (Vickie) Sandberg and Joyce (Chuck) Harper, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Special thanks to St. Croix Hospice, Baxter, MN and all of the wonderful caregivers at Green Pine Acres where Mavis had lived for the past two years. Memorials preferred to Parkinson’s Foundation or your local food shelf. A celebration of her life will be at 11 am on Wednesday, April 19th, 2023 at the Wevley Funeral Home in Sebeka, MN with visitation one hour prior to the service. Details to follow.
