Marvin Matthew Mattila

Marvin Matthew Mattila joined his beloved wife Mavis in heaven at the age of 85 on Wednesday, April 26th, 2023. He was born June 28,1937 in Cokato, MN to Otto and Fannie (Annala) Mattila. The only boy of 7 children, Marv grew up in Cokato and Menahga. He graduated from Dassel High School in 1955. Soon after, he enlisted in the Army and served for two years in Oahu, HI. He then worked construction for a few years in Minneapolis. During this time he met his future wife, Mavis Sandberg. They were married April 8, 1961 in Montevideo, MN. They had two daughters and made their home in Brooklyn Park. Marv was a Mail Carrier and retired from the Post Office in 1992 after 31years. When he wasn’t delivering mail he was a volunteer member of the Brooklyn Park Police Reserves for 21years. In 2001 Marv and Mavis moved to Menahga so Marv could continue his life long love of fishing. He was and avid gardener and the raspberry patch was his pride and joy. When he wasn’t fishing or in the garden, he was doing puzzles, tinkering in his garage or helping Mavis with craft projects. He built wooden birdhouses, tulips, ornaments, whatever she needed. Marv was a gentle soul who loved children, the outdoors, telling jokes and sharing fishing stories. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge of history and life experiences with his 3 grandsons. He is survived by daughters: Mindy (Mark) Lapham and Missy Schleper. Grandsons: Jay (Sev Larson) Lapham, John Lapham and Grant Schleper. Sister: Karen Stoner of Meridianville, AL and many nieces, nephews and friends. Marv is preceded in death by his wife of almost 62 years, Mavis, and sisters Wilma Servin, Esther Runquist, Anita Luoto, Helmi Erickson and Edna Breaux. A special thank you to the kind and patient staff at Wooodside Manor where he lived for the last 15months. A celebration of Marvin’s life will be at 2:00pm, Thursday May 4th at Wevley Funeral Home in Sebeka MN with visitation one hour prior to service. Interment for both Marv and Mavis will take place at Sparta Cemetery in Granite Falls, MN on June 13.
