Lorraine Madelyn Jacob

December 31, 1923 — November 18, 2018

Lorraine Jacob 94, of Menahga, MN, died Sunday, November 18, 2018 at Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in Menahga. Lorraine Madelyn Dobson was born on December 31, 1923 in Menahga to Herb and Susie Dobson. She grew up and spent her entire life in Menahga. Along with helping raise her younger siblings, she worked on the farm  and attended all twelve years at Menahga Public Schools. She graduated with the class of 1942.She worked for a year in St. Paul at the Modification Center at Northwest Airlines where she wired electrical harnesses in the Bomb Bay of the B24 during World War II. She was a proud Rosie the Riveter. In August 1943, she married Melvin Jacob and they started their life together where they milked cows and farmed until Melvin's health forced them to move to town. Melvin worked as a mechanic for years and Lorraine was a homemaker. She worked various small jobs, including Elsie's Dress Shop, Johnson's Variety Store, and later she began working as a clerk at Howie's Clothing, where she continued for 24 years. She raised three children during this time, becoming involved in her community with PTA, church activities and taking care of her family. She also enjoyed canning fruits and vegetables each summer to carry her family through the long winter months. After retiring from Howie's, she continued working as a volunteer until age 80. She started the Menahga Food Shelf and coordinated it for 17 years. Volunteering and serving others was always her first priority. She was always one of the first to take a meal to someone in need, be it a sickness, accident or death. She packed several Christmas dinners in to-go boxes and the shut-ins received their delivery before the family sat down to eat. She volunteered in the beauty shop fixing hair and polishing nails at Green Pine Acres Nursing Home every Wednesday, worked with hospice, the Menahga Museum and she was honored by the Menahga AARP Chapter 4091 as Woman of the Year in 1994.She and her good friend Betty Liimatta made donuts four to five times a year, and they were always the first to sell out at the church bazaars.Melvin passed away in 2007. In 2009 when an apartment became available, Lorraine moved to Woodside Manor where she has resided since. She became known for her famous banana bread (using her mother Susie's recipe). Each new resident would receive a welcome note attached to a small loaf of banana bread. They would receive another on their birthday.Every Monday and Wednesday afternoon you could find her in the day room playing games of Bingo and Skip Bo. She was a faithful servant to the Menahga United Methodist Church. She served anywhere she was needed, including Ladies Aid, United Methodist Women, Sunday School, and VBS. She loved her Lord.Lorraine was an important resource for the history of Menahga. She was on a part of the Menahga Centennial Book Committee in 1992. Anyone who had questions or needed to "connect the dots" knew they could come to her for the full story. She will be missed. She leaves behind three children and their families; Merle Jacob (Lyn) of Menahga, Russell (Elaine) Jacob of Menahga, and Gwen (Tom) Larson of Kuna, ID; 9 Grandchildren, 15 Great Grandchildren; Sister Phyllis Kent of Washington; Brother Dennis (Nita) Dobson of Wisconsin, Brother-in-law Gerald (Nancy) Jacob; Brother-in-law Everett Myhrum; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was met in Heaven by her husband Melvin, five brothers, one sister, and infant grandson Michael.Visitation will be from 4-6 PM Friday, November 23, 2018 at Menahga United Methodist Church in Menahga and one hour prior to the service at the church.
