Larry Martin Komppa

    Larry Martin Komppa, age 68, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, December 19, 2017. Larry was the 12th son of 13 children (eight boys and five girls) born to Nestor and Senia Komppa, pioneers in Red Eye Township. He was born at his parents' home on May 29, 1949.     Larry was confirmed to the Christian faith at Grace Lutheran Church in Sebeka. He attended school through the eighth grade at country school District 2438 (the old District 45) and attended high school into the tenth grade at Sebeka Public School. He worked on the family dairy farm, as well as the Sebeka Co-op Elevator. He later became a custodian at the Sebeka Public School; a position he held for 36 years.    On April 12, 1975, Larry and Rebecca Bradshaw were united in marriage at Grace Lutheran Church in Sebeka. They are blessed with two sons, Eric and Frank, which has grown to include two daughters (by marriage), Anna (nee Isaacson) and Megan (nee Yliniemi), and nine grandchildren – Oliver, Elsa, Howard, Ted, Clara, Harlow, Ina, Vivian, and Archie.    Larry played on the Red Eye baseball team, a local country league started by the Komppa and Makela neighborhood boys and later the amateur men's league for red Eye. The love of baseball remained with him throughout his lifetime.    Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Nestor and Senia Komppa; four brothers, Gene, Andrew, Arve and Clifford; three sisters, Florence Komppa, Annie Komppa and Hazel Schmitz; five nephews, Michael Levander, Chuck Komppa, Jake Anderson, Craig Anderson, and Travis Friesner; brother-in-law Calvin Carpenter; and sister-in-law Shirley Komppa.    He is survived by his wife, Rebecca; his two sons, and nine grandchildren; three brothers: Donald (Jane) Komppa of Sebeka, Fred (Evelyn) Komppa of Kinney, and Gary Komppa of Colorado City, Texas; brother-in-law Jack Schmitz of Hibbing; two sisters, Ruth Carpenter of Menahga, and Linda (Bruce) Levander of Gilbert; sister-in-law Ruth Komppa of New York Mills.    Visitation will be held Friday, December 22, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Wevley Funeral Chapel in Sebeka. Funeral services will be held at Sebeka Apostolic Lutheran Church at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 23.     Honorary pallbearers are grandchildren Elsa, Clara, Ina, Vivian, Ted, Harlow and Archie. Active casketbearers are his sons Eric and Frank, grandsons Oliver and Howard, nephews Tom Komppa, Rodney Carpenter, and Marvin Warmbold.
