James Harland Killmer

July 17, 1942 — December 21, 2023

James (Jim/Toby) Harland Killmer, age 81, left us after a long battle with dementia on December 21, 2023. Jim was born July 17, 1942, in Blackduck, MN to Harland and Laura Grace Killmer. They moved to Isanti, MN early in his high school years, where he graduated from Cambridge High School in Cambridge, MN in 1961. Shortly after graduation, Jim enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton in California and Oahu, Hawaii. Jim started his over 40-year law enforcement career in Isanti County in 1973. In 1999, Jim retired as the Chief of Police in Menahga, MN. After retirement, he served part time in the Hubbard County Sheriff’s boat and water patrol department. Jim was a servant at heart. He spent countless hours volunteering for the VFW, American Legion, fire department, first responders, coaching hockey, and many other organizations. Jim’s legacy will be remembered far beyond his loved ones because of the lives he impacted in his service to the local community. In his free time, Jim enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing softball, and 4-wheeling. Jim instilled a love for sports in his children, especially hockey and softball. Jim played softball into his 70’s. He enjoyed spending time on the porch with his 2 dogs, Izzy and Itzie. Jim is survived by his dear friend, Toni Schmidt of Menahga; children Craig Killmer of Nevis, MN, Jeff (Andrea) Killmer of Grand Rapids, MN, Suzie (Paul) Katusky of Lindstrom, MN, and Luke (Amy) Schmidt of Menahga; grandchildren Christopher and Emily Killmer, Estelle and Drew LeVasseur and Isabel Kilmer, Elijah and Ethan Katusky, and lovingly known as “the Nanny” to Autumn, Estelle, Lana and Landyn Schmidt; his sister Sharon Crawford of Pillager, MN; many cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Virgil Crawford; nephew Mark Crawford. Special thanks to the nurses and caregivers at Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in Menahga for their love and care of Jim this past year. Visitation will be from 5-7 PM Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at Wevley Funeral Home Sebeka, MN and one hour prior to the Service at the Church.
