Edwin Floyd Haverinen

June 8, 1929 — March 7, 2018

Edwin Floyd Haverinen, age 88, of Menahga, passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2018, at Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in Menahga, surrounded by family members. Edwin was born June 8, 1929, in Wadena County to Oscar and Mary (Hendrickson) Haverinen, the youngest of three children. He attended Menahga Public Schools through the 8th grade. As a young man Edwin had to take over running the family dairy farm and taking care of his ailing mother after his father died. This made Edwin a self-reliant and hard-working man. Edwin also cut and sold Christmas trees, and operated his own sawmill. He was very proud of his Finnish heritage and loved to teach everyone he met how to speak Finnish. Edwin was extremely proud of his family. He was united in marriage to Sylvia Spiegelberg in 1957. They divorced in 1974. Edwin sold the cattle in 1975 and then traveled to Prudo Bay, Alaska, to work on the Alaskan Pipeline. After the pipeline he lived in Anchorage and Palmer, and worked as a handyman, cannery worker, and carpenter. He then moved to Kodiak Island, where he cut and sold firewood, and worked as a commercial fisherman during the fishing season. In 1986 he moved back to Menahga to be closer to family. He worked at the turkey plant in Frazee for several years and then retired. He resided on the Haverinen Family Farm until failing health caused him to move into the Nursing Home in 2015. Edwin was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Harry Haverinen, sister Miriam Mullen, a son Daniel, and daughter Lorie Stromberg. Edwin is survived by his daughter, Susie (Butch) Larson of Menahga, Jay (Mary) Haverinen of Dalbo, and Steve (Glenda) Haverinen of Princeton, grandchildren Jesse (Stephanie) Larson, Megan Holcomb, Heidi Haverinen, Casey Haverinen, Sydney Haverinen and Samantha Haverinen, and great-grandchildren Aiden Larson and Isabelle Larson.Funeral services will be Monday, March 12, at 11 a.m at the Sebeka United Methodist Church with Pastor Steve Koehne officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, March 11, from 4-7 p.m at the Wevley Funeral Chapel in Sebeka. Pallbearers are Jesse Larson, Heidi Haverinen, Casey Haverinen, Wayne Haverinen, Loren Haverinen, and Sonny Hendrickson. Music will be provided by Mary Hanninen.
