Alvin Delmore Urvig

May 28, 1942 — October 16, 2021

Alvin Delmore Urvig, 79, of Menahga, Minnesota, passed away Saturday, October 16, 2021, at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, after a courageous battle with many physical challenges. It is a comfort to know his body is healed and he has no more pain. Alvin Delmore Urvig was born on May 28, 1942 to Delmore and Sophia Urvig of Mahnomen, Minnesota. He attended Mahnomen schools, graduating in 1960. Prior to being drafted in 1964, he worked for LB Hanson in Mahnomen. In 1965, he was deployed to Vietnam, as part of the 1st Battalion, 7th Field Artillery and was honorably discharged in 1966. Upon returning to Mahnomen, Al worked as an over-the-road truck driver, prior to finding the career, as a machinist, that he enjoyed until retirement. First, he worked for RJ Industries in St. Louis Park. During this time a “blind date” would reconnect Al with Mary Ann (Beckman) as they were classmates at Mahnomen High School. That “blind date” began a courtship for both Al and his good friend Keith VanHorne, with the Beckman sisters Mary Ann and Barbara. Al and Mary Ann were joined in marriage on June 15, 1968. They began married life in Bloomington, MN then moved to Monticello, MN when Al accepted a machinist position at Remmele Engineering. Al worked for 35 years at Remmele Engineering, with many fond memories shared at the annual open house. Al and Mary Ann enjoyed adventures over the years, including camping, motorcycling, and raising their family. Some particularly memorable trips include annual camping over Memorial Day weekend, the Black Hills, and Yellowstone. Al and Mary Ann moved to Menahga upon retirement to enjoy living on their own 80 acre hobby farm. This was a dream come true to move to northern Minnesota. Al loved his tractors and spending time working his land. He was an avid outdoorsman; hunting, camping and exploring. He enjoyed woodworking and blessed family with many projects. He was always ready to help his children with projects; his advice and hands-on demonstration was greatly appreciated, he could help with anything from repair and maintenance to the construction of new homes. He enjoyed serving his community as a Trustee at Christ Lutheran Church, Wolf Lake, MN. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends and hunting companions. Al is survived by his wife Mary Ann, his children Dwain (Terri), Kevin (Jane), Kimberly (Lowell), Chad, his grandchildren Angela (Matheu), Anthony, Ashleigh, Andrew, David (Hailey), Symantha, Abigail (Miguel), Michael, Timothy, Allison, Zachary, Arin, Kylie, Dylan, great-grandchild Greyson, and sisters Delores, Sylvia (Gary) and June (Rocky). He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Lucille and brother Dick, a niece and nephews. Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, October 22, 2021 at the Christ Lutheran Church in Wolf Lake MN with visitation one hour prior to service at the church. Coffee and cookies will be served after the service. Interment will be at the Minnesota State Veterans Administration Cemetery, Little Falls MN.
