Allen August Hoyhtya

Allen Hoyhtya of Wolf Lake passed away on January 5th, 2019 at the age of 85. Allen had been battling lung cancer for two years previous to his passing. Allen was born February 5th, 1933 in rural Wolf Lake to John and Hilja (Tanney) Hoyhtya. He was one of eleven children. He attended school in the country through the 8th grade. At home, he helped with various tasks around the farm. He made most of his own things such as his skis and sling shots. He also made his own snares for trapping. Allen volunteered for two years in the U.S. Army draft with the military police patrol in Fort Lewis Madigan Army Hospital, Olympia, Tacoma, Seattle, and Yakima Washington. He received his Honorable Discharge in 1955. On September 6th, 1958, Allen married Evelyn Meyers at Spruce Grove Apostolic Lutheran Church in Wolf Lake, Minnesota. They began their life together in Minneapolis, Minnesota. During this time, he did steel work for ten years. This was followed by nine years working for the Minnesota Highway Department. Then, they moved to their farm in Wolf Lake, Minnesota in June 1970 where they raised their two daughters, Rita and Renee. While in Wolf Lake, Allen was a farmer and raised beef cattle. Allen was an avid hunter and trapper. He also enjoyed playing horseshoes and was a part of the Wolf Lake Horseshoe Club. He enjoyed spending time with his wife as well. They would go on walks, take day trips to casinos, and watch baseball and football together. They also enjoyed going out dancing. He is survived by his daughters, Rita Boutot and Renee (Cimarron) Drewicke. He has four grandchildren, Tara Drewicke, Grace Drewicke, Ainslie Boutot, and Jack Boutot. He is also survived by his siblings, Mayme Harstad, Wilbert Hoyhtya, Silvia (Leroy) Luedke, Ruth (Don) Toppari, and Millie (Ron) Burkman. He is preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn, his mother, Hilja, and his father, John. He is also preceded in death by his siblings, Elmer, Walter, Arnold, Abner, Marie Jokela and his infant sister. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, January 10th at 1:00pm at the Christ Lutheran Church in Wolf Lake, MN. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service at the church.
