Pastor John Paul Schiotz

July 24, 1939 — June 13, 2015

Pastor J. Paul Schiotz died on June 13, 2015. He was born July 24, 1939 in Fargo, ND to Fredrik and Dagny Schiotz. He attended elementary school in Brooklyn and Long Island, NY and high school at Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis. He spent his summers at the family cabin on Stocking Lake or working on a farm in Taylor, ND. He graduated in 1961 from St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. He then spent a year overseas in Japan working for a Christian company teaching English to their factory workers. He pursued his Masters of Divinity at Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, MN. In 1967 Paul married Marlene Yohe and together they raised three children and built a lake cabin in Menahga, MN. Paul served many congregations and touched many lives throughout his career. His first parish was in Kennewick, WA. He spent a year in the Clinical Pastoral Education program at Lutheran General Hospital in Chicago, IL. From there he ministered in Omaha, NE, Ephrata, WA, Blackduck and Foxhome, MN. In 2004 he and Marlene retired to their cabin on Stocking Lake. He is survived by his wife, Marlene; 3 children Kirstin of Fargo, ND, Beth (Jeff) Leighton of Detroit Lakes, MN, and son Sean of Christine, ND; two grandchildren, AJ and Maari Leighton; a sister, Lois (Paul) Eid of Minneapolis, MN; and many cousins, nieces and nephews across the United States. He is preceded in death by his parents, Fredrik and Dagny, and older brother Nathan. There will be a Service of Praise and Thanksgiving In Memory of Pastor J. Paul Schiotz in Menahga, MN at Camp Emmaus on July 18, 2015 at 1pm.
