Melvin Eugene Schwartz

Melvin Eugene Schwartz age 86 of Sebeka, MN, died on September 9, 2013 at Regency Care Center in Golden Valley, MN surrounded by his loving wife and family. Melvin was born to William "Bill Schwartz" and Emma (Kleinke) Schwartz in Bluffton Township June 20, 1927. He attended District 180 Country School until the eighth grade. He farmed with his parents and did various jobs until he signed up with United States Army and served his country in World War II. He was a medic and paratrooper stationed in Japan. After he was honorably discharged in April 1947, he returned to Sebeka and resumed farming with his dad. At the age of 23 Melvin married the love of his life Marjorie Nelson on January 11, 1951 at the First English Parsonage in Menahga, MN. They were blessed with 6 children whom he was very proud of each and everyday. Melvin worked at the Sebeka Land 0' Lakes plant and then went on to work at Land 0' Lakes in Perham until his retirement in June of 1989. He loved the outdoors, watching sports, working in the woods, and fishing and hunting with his sons. Melvin took much pride in his lawn and with Marj they tended their beautiful flowers and huge garden and they loved to share the bounty with neighbors, friends and family. He enjoyed his polka music and loved to be with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and he always had candy in his cupboard or a treat in his pocket for them. Melvin is survived by his wife Marjorie of 62 years, children Pat Kisacky (Dennis Imdieke), Gene Schwartz (Tami), Pam Horstmann, LuAnn (Tad) Hoefs, Joel Schwartz (Pam) grandchildren: Michele (Adam) Steege, Ginger Rehm, Stephanie (Shawn) Jordahl, Colin Hoefs, Toni Parsons (Matt Wien), Drew Schwartz, Mikaela Schwartz, Taylor Schwartz, Katelyn, Schwartz and Maddie Schwartz and 11 great-grandchildren, two sisters, Betty Siirila and Joan (LaVern) Salo, sisters-in-law Olga Schwartz, June (Dennis) Schmitz, Sharon (Roy) Hemphill, Linda (Marty) Covert and Kathy Nelson. Preceding Melvin in his death, an infant son, his parents Bill and Emma, in-laws Irvin and Beatrice Nelson, son-in-law Ben Horstmann, brothers Billy and Art, brothers-in-law Fred, Wally, Bob, Delvin, Kenny and sisters-in-law Doris. Celebration of life will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, September 13, 2013 at Wevley Funeral Home in Sebeka and 1 hour prior to service at church. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at First English Lutheran Church in Menahga with Pastors Steven A. Bruer and Pastor Michael McIlheran officiating. Linda Roiko will service as organist. Honorary Pallbearers are all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Active Casketbearers included William Roiko, Richard Roiko, Les Schwartz, Jim Siirila, Allen Siirila, and Salvador DaSilva. Berg Nyland American Legion Post # 456 of Sebeka will provide Military Honors. Interment will be at the Sebeka West Cemetery.
