Ethel Mary Schumaker

Ethel Mary Schumaker, age 84, of Menahga, MN died Saturday, January 26, 2013 at Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in Menahga. Ethel “Sandi” was born to Edwin and Theresa (Voss) Hughes on September 23, 1928 in Underwood, South Dakota. She graduated from Park Rapids High School in 1946. She married Leland Schumaker in 1949 and they were blessed with three children: Lynette, Leighanne and David. Ethel attended college at Bemidji State, earning her Master’s Degree in 1969. She taught school in Menahga for 30 years. She loved her students and felt that educating children was a person’s highest calling. Many of her students went on to become teachers themselves. Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Theresa Hughes, husband Lee, daughter Leighanne. She is survived by sister Patricia Meinke, brother Jim Hughes, daughter Lyn, son Dave and grandchildren Meryl and Nate Schumaker. Memorial Services will tentatively be held 11:00 AM on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at Wevley Funeral Home in Sebeka, MN with visitation one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be at the Menahga City Cemetery at a later date.
