Leona Agnes Avelsgard Spencer (nee Lewis), age 92, of Menahga, MN died Saturday, January 21, 2012 at Rose Haven Alternative Living Facility in Menahga, MN. Leona was born to Grant and Nellie (nee Gates) Lewis on January 11, 1920 in Battle Creek, Michigan. She had four brothers and one sister. In 1934 Leona settled with her family south of Nimrod where she finished her schooling in a country school. Leona was united in marriage to Harold Avelsgard in 1942, four sons and one daughter were born to this union; Gerald, Roger, Clifford, Gail and Russell. The family lived in North Germany Township until Harold’s death in 1975, Leona then moved to Wadena until 1979 when she married Stuart Spencer. Stuart died in 1988. Leona is survived by three sons, Roger Avelsgard of Colonial Heights, Virginia; Clifford Avelsgard of Litchfield, MN; and Russell Avelsgard and his wife Karen of Menahga, MN; one brother Robert Lewis and his wife Shirley; one sister Ethel Tellock; two sisters-in-law Florence Lewis and Adeline Griffith; step-children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Grant and Nellie Lewis, two husbands, Harold Avelsgard and Stuart Spencer, one son, Gerald, one daughter Gail, who died at birth, three brothers, Everett, Ralph, and Lloyd Lewis, and two daughters-in-law Linda and Donna. Memorial Services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, February 11, 2012 at the Wevley Funeral Home in Sebeka, MN with Pastor Steven Koehne officiating. Honorary Pallbearers are all of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Inurnment will be at Sebeka West Cemetery at a later date.
