Waldemar “Wally” Walter Ahlf

February 11, 1927 — August 22, 2011

Waldemar Walter Ahlf or Wally as he was known to so many was 84 years, 6 months, and 11 days old when he went to be with the Lord. He was a resident of Menahga, MN for 31 years. Wally was born to Ella (nee) Hink and Henry Ahlf in Urbank, MN. He was raised there with his siblings Alvin (Nina) Ahlf and Betty Martin. Waldemar had his confirmation at St. James Lutheran Church in South Effington Township, Parkers Prairie, MN on June 9th 1940. He graduated from Parkers Prairie High School in 1945. Wally was the beloved husband of Kathryn Carol Ahlf for a wonderful 62 years. They were married on July 30th, 1949 in St. Paul, Minnesota at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Waldemar joined the military at age 19. He was in the United States Army in WWII beginning April 24th, 1946 and honorably discharged December 16th, 1949. Following the war, he joined the 9th Marine Corps Reserve on December 16th, 1949 through August 21st, 1950. After completing his military service, Wally worked for the Ford Motor Co. for a short while before joining the St. Paul Police Force as a Patrolman from 1955- 1977. He then was employed with the Battle Lake school system from 1977-1980. Waldemar next served as Chief of Police in Menahga from 1980-1987. His final employment before retirement was part-time at the Wadena County Sherriff’s Department (1987-1997). Waldemar Ahlf held many awards including Senior Volunteer of the Year for Wadena County, and was most recently honored as Parkers Prairie Baseball Team’s Oldest Recognized Player. Wally was an avid fisherman and hunter. He also enjoyed golfing, spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, walking, and nature watching. He was quite keen at spotting wildlife right outside his back door! Waldemar also held many offices. He was past commander of VFW Post 6206 and Adjutant for the Post, President of Region 5 Senior Nutrition Council, and Deacon for Redeemer Lutheran Church. He will forever be remembered by his beloved children Karen (Greg) Dyrhaug, Susan Witt (deceased), Bruce (Terri) Ahlf, Mark (Diane) Ahlf, Denise (Bob) Malmgren, Traci Abbott, Martin (Laura) Ahlf, Joy Cantrell, and foster daughter Sandy McJunkin, treasured grandchildren Eric, Jalena, Matthew, Brandon, Ron, Phil, Nikolas, Devon, Derek, Candace, Cheryl, Jennifer, Mark, Schuyler, Steven, Nica, Bradley, Ashley, Michael, Joelle, Jonni, Scott, Travis, Tyler, Alicia, Cierra, Andrew, Angela, Nathan, Victoria and Saige, and adored by his 24 caring great grandchildren. The visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, August 27th, 2011 at the Wevley Funeral Home of Sebeka, MN. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 28th, 2011 at Sebeka United Methodist Church with Pastor Steven Koehne and Pastor Ernest Strandberg officiating Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN on Monday, August 29th, 2011 at 1:45 p.m. Friends and Family have been Assigned Assembly Area 2 please enter gate 2. Wally’s children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were the pride of his life. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be sent to the family.
